New Photoshop CS3 Rocks
I have been beta testing Photoshop CS3 for a good few months, but I was obligated to stay mum about such project as well as its details. With NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) lifted after Adobe's announcement, I would share with you some new features of CS3 that would make Photographers life more exciting.

1. Palletes
First of, my favorite improvement, CS3 has completely overhauled its panel interface. In the old Photoshop, the screen was cluttered with panels, which does not allow me to edit large images effectively, I have to constantly toggle screen modes to show and hide panels. Now you can easily collapse panels and only show one or two at a time, hence it conserves a lot of desktop estate.

2. Effects
In addition to a host of adjustment filters already in CS2, CS3 added new adjustment filters that help you create special coloring effects on pictures.

3. Smart Filter
This is my second favorite. Now you can apply destructive filters such as blur, sharpen, distortion on your layers and can still adjust them, turn them on and off at a later time -- in other words, they become non-destructive in a way. Nice thing of all, you can apply these on a single layer or a group of layers -- the process, however, requires you convert your existing layer (or layers) into a smart object before you can leverage such powerful feature.

4. Look mom, I can do 3D in Photoshop
This may not be useful for photographer, but it comes in handy when you are in the situation to integrate some 3D objects into your CS3 file.

5. Say Good-bye to ImageReady
Adobe has introduced ImageReady since version 5.0 of Photoshop years ago. ImageReady has some features of Photoshop and a workflow designed specifically for web developers such as animations, slicing and such. However, integration between the two programs (since version 5.5) have been lousy, inconveniently slow and sometimes corrupted. In the new Photoshop, ImageReady is finally IN Photopshop!

6. Other Features
Adobe also integrate some video editing features for Photoshop which allows you to paint over videos frame by frame. Back in 1999, I was involved in such a video project that I needed to do a host of special effects that requires frame-by-frame editing. It was time consuming because I had to constantly integrate my PS edits into the video, compile the video and see if it worked, if it didn't, I had to tear it down and redid the work. Considering I had to paint 30 pictures just to satisfy a second of the video, you could start to imagine how painful it could be. CS3 didn't reduce the pain of 30 pictures, but it made the experiments and integration much smoother. (The only drawback, instead of billing 300 hours for the job, I could only bill half with CS3. )
The print interface has been revamped to allow better control over how image should appear on the paper.
Adobe also added Device Central for people who would develop images for mobile devices. These might not be features you would use daily but worth a mention.
CS3 comes in two flavors. The more expensive flavor has 3D and video features that I would be glad not to pay since I rarely get to use them for my current work.
If you are not ready to pay a big buck for Photoshop, Adobe is planning to release a web edition of Photoshop online, and you only pay by subscription -- meaning, you pay for using Photoshop periodically.

sweet! tangent真的beta test了吗?
tangent 2007-3-21 06:27 PM
Yep, I have submitted numerous bug reports to Adobe. In the past two versions of PS (CS and CS2), they rewarded me free copies of Photoshop for being top bug reporters, I hope they would do the same this round. :D
