*******************************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
As you are aware from our previous email, there are numerous problems
with the new Microsoft Vista Operating system. At this point in time,
our IT support team is unable to support the Vista operating system.
We always encourage you to discuss your computer purchases with our IT
team prior to placing the order. Effective immediately, I am asking the
office staff of both departments to help ensure that no further systems
are ordered with the Vista operating system (whether through grants,
POs, etc.). We suggest that all new systems that would otherwise come
with Vista be reinstalled with Windows XP or purchased without an
operating system (as we can install XP free on campus). Again, our IT
staff is very willing to assist.
When, in consultation with the user, the IT group determines that a
particular system has no viable alternative to Vista, they will provide
a network connection for that system with the understanding that if the
system is found to be causing problems on the network (including
scanning other systems) we will pull the network connection and it'll be
the owner's responsibility to fix the problem on their own or through
some other entity that supports Vista. [This includes personal systems
that you may use here on campus.] If the problem is not fixable, it will
not be allowed back on our network. [It is our current policy to pull
the network connection from any computer that is causing network
problems. The problem with Vista systems is that our support team will
not be able to help you resolve issues resulting from the use of the
Vista operating system.]
I asked Suzanne to put together a brief list of why we are being so
adamant about avoiding the use of Vista at this point in time. Please
see the list below.
I thank you in advance for your cooperation. Again, our networks are
only as secure as the systems we put on it. Your continued diligence has
helped us avoid some of the most recent virus and other problems that
have effected other areas of the campus. We will continue our part to
ensure the network's stability and security. Please let me know if you
have any specific concerns.

Here's a quick list of why:
1) Windows Update is mandatory in Vista, leaving no defense against
patches that break other stuff. Microsoft has a long history of
releasing patches that break third-party software or even render the
entire system unusable.
2) In order to keep users from illegally sharing "premium content" like
music or movies, if Microsoft determines that some device or software
can potentially be used to share such content they will cripple that
hardware/software, disabling those devices worldwide via Windows Update
until the vendor provides an updated driver to Microsoft's
specifications. If it's an older device for which the vendor isn't
interested in rewriting their drivers (and in the fast-moving hardware
market most devices enter legacy status within a year or two of their
replacement models becoming available), all devices of that type
worldwide become permanently disabled.
3) Most existing software is not compatible with Vista. You will have to
purchase upgrades to almost all the software you run and many programs
will never be upgraded to Vista. Even many current printers don't have
Vista drivers, and many never will. Developing Vista drivers and getting
them approved by Microsoft is just too expensive.
4) If you change two or more pieces of hardware in the system, Vista
assumes you are up to something and possibly trying to pirate it onto
another system and it will self-invalidate its license, causing you to
have to purchase a whole new Vista license.
5) Vista Activation, should it fail or be aborted, phones home to
Microsoft with enough details to identify your computer and possibly
your location
6) Vista has less functionality than XP at a much higher cost.
A note:
Upgrading to Windows Vista has been banned by the U.S. Department of
Transportation (DOT), the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), technology giants
Texas Instruments & IBM, all California schools, and other corporations
and government agencies. Significant portions of Europe are moving to
Mac and Linux.

Here is the original email sent out in January:
-------- Original Message --------
Subject: [Chem-staff] [Chem-all] FYI: Windows Vista
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2007 16:22:01 -0500
From: Suzanne Palmer <suzanne@chem.umass.edu>
To: chem-all@chem.umass.edu, bmb-all@biochem.umass.edu
As the new year begins and everyone starts thinking about getting new
computers and/or upgrading their current ones, we'd like to caution
folks that there are, at this time, significant problems with Windows
Vista and it is not within the capacity of the IT department to support
it at this time.
If you are considering a new PC purchase, we strongly recommend that you
purchase it with Windows XP. If you have reasons you feel you must
upgrade to Vista, please consult with the IT group prior to making that
decision.

aeolus 2007-4-6 10:05 PM

It's OK if you have enough memory.
It is better than XP definitely

imac 2007-4-8 04:53 AM

Vista, so I know this email forwarded is just another hoax
1) Windows Update is mandatory in Vista, leaving no defense against
patches that break other stuff
Like updates currently in Windows XP, you can have the option not to install the updates. It is not mandatory, but by the default it downloads and installs. As a power user you can change such setting. I have numerous friends who ignored the updates and got loads of issues later on. Such auto installation would have saved them.
2) In order to keep users from illegally sharing "premium content" like
music or movies
This is part of DRM (Digital Rights Management). It is not governed by Microsoft but the content owner itself. This would be the same across other platforms including Apple's iTune. It is not Microsoft throwing this crap at you, but RIAA and MPAA.
3) Most existing software is not compatible with Vista. You will have to
purchase upgrades to almost all the software you run and many programs
Almost all of the programs I have bought run reasonably well in Vista. There are, however, missing drivers such as my Laser Printer, that's just manufacturer's lagging behind. Do you notice the author of this email has no facts to back his claims?
4) If you change two or more pieces of hardware in the system, Vista
assumes you are up to something and possibly trying to pirate it onto
another system and it will self-invalidate its license
This happens with XP as well. You can always call Microsoft about this problem. It is a headache. But hey, tell all your friends stop pirating software, this would save all of our honest buyers a lot of hassle.
5) Vista Activation, should it fail or be aborted, phones home to
Microsoft with enough details to identify your computer and possibly
This is urban legend.
I would suggest everyone wait for another 2 to 3 months before upgrading your day-to-day computer to Vista, by then, most programs and drivers would have patches that allow the them work flawlessly in Vista. As far as for laptop users, I notice the battery life on Vista is noticeably shorter with its default setting, and experience with 2GB of RAM is smoother.

I love vista. Of course, to show my love for this pretty baby, i added an additional 1 G memory and it cost me 80 bucks .
