Dear Editor:
I was and am very very upset to read the article about
Tibetan situation in yesterday's daily collegian. As far as I know, the
situation in Tibet is a riot rather than a so-called "parade". The
rioters killed so many innocent peoples, one of them is just a
five-year-old kid. I don't think any country in this world will allow
this kind of riot without any response. I think the one who should be
blamed is not Chinese government, it is the RIOTERS! I do not know
where did the author get all those informations, and I strongly
recommend him (her) to talk with someone from China before writing this
kind of article. There are almost one thousand Chinese students
working or studying in UMASS Amherst, I am sure everybody will be very
happy to tell him(her) why Tibet is part of China, and what's the real
situation in Tibet now.
Again, I am very upset of The Daily
Collegian for publishing such an extreme article without further
investigations. I believe that gave most of the Chinese students,
faculties and staffs a very bad impression of The Collegian Daily.

Dear editors,
I am writing to address a problem about your 3/31 news about Tibet:
http://www.dailycollegian.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&ustory_id=afc4646e-7c8e-447b-af0d-22766fdf5e09&page=2
Obvious bias and missing of informationmakes me really angry about your news. Being the most influencial
newspaper in Umass and also New England colleges, I respect a lot of
your work, completeness of report and political justice.
However, this article disappoints me greatly by speaking
completely for one side!!! Your news ignores the fact that the crisis
in Tibet has complicated history background and this issue cannot be
simply viewed just from some limited voices, newspapers, especially
CNN. If you just go to
youtube.com you'll find tons of other side of this crisis.
So, please interview more people, more voices before you write
those articles. Even if you don't mean to select a specific political
part to join, you already offended a lot of Chinese students and
scholars by the ridiculous INFORMATION ASYMMETRY!
Sorry if my words displease you. I just want you to understand how
we feel about this article and our country. I don't want to argue with
you who is right and who is wrong here, because it's a long story and
it's a story involves too much conspiracy we may not know and convince
each other. Also, I don't want to say, it's our own business and no
country is qualified to judge since it's an open world, and everyone
could speak his own opinion.
Therefore, my opinion is, you should let people know more about China, and Tibet problem. BUT PLEASE, keep your
elementary EQUITY, which is the BASIC JOB of newspaper and media industry.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers,
From Leo Gao:
Having spent my Ph.D period at Amherst, I know what a liberal place
Amherst is and I have also talked/debated with many of tibetan fellows.
But this matter is everything but being liberal!!!
A simple fact an one year (maybe not one but five I suppose) old
kid could see China has brought Tibet from slavery to modernization,
the majority of the people are better off now. Many (or most) of people
who now reside oversea and make fuss on the issue because they were the
slave owners and the noble group and deprived of their previlige. The
others are some idealists and naive and simple-minded people who don't
really know much about the history but told and used by those people
with agenda. It is absurdly funny and sad to see so many kind and
innocent western people to stand with them without efforts to knowing
the truth/history behind the matter.
I have had understanding/sympathy for Tibet. And I have to admit
that there is much to be improved from the Central Gov part. Having
said that, I feel this free tibet movement is nothing but absurd. I am
completely appalled and DISGUSTED by the current move from oversea
"so-called" Tibetan and the sheer media distortion on it. For the first
time in my life, I have so be with the central Gov on the issue. If I
may give some of you a pieace of my mind, in particular those media
professions if you consider yourself (qualified?) as one of them, do
your homework and know what you are talking about before you
speak/comment on a matter of such gravity. Or simply Keep one's mouth
shut instead of showing the ignorance.
