UCdavis is better than Umass in terms of Ph.D program, for master degree, Umass Amherst has a very good job market, i.e.a lot of industry connections, even better than some 1 year ivy school master program, so I.M.O,it is not reasonable to get master on your own expenses at Ucdavis if you are targeting to find a job immediately after your master, Umass is really a good choice.
